WatchUnderstanding Water Loss Claims: A Homeowner's Case StudyIf you've never been through a water loss, the process can feel like a black box. Who shows up? What will they do? How long will my house look like a construction zone? Matthew made our case study video because he wanted homeowners to see the process up close before they need it.
Here's what to expect when you work with CMDR Restoration and G3, from the first call to the final walkthrough.
What Happens on the First Call?
You'll talk with a real person. We'll ask:
- Where did the water come from, and is it stopped?
- How long has it been wet?
- Which rooms and levels are affected?
- Is the water clean, or could it be contaminated?
- Is anyone at risk, like a sagging ceiling or water near outlets?
Then we'll tell you what to do while you wait: shut off the main, turn off power to wet rooms if safe, stay out from under wet ceilings and take photos.
What Happens When the Crew Arrives?
CMDR Restoration, our mitigation partner (licensed by TDLR, RCO #1801), will:
- Make it safe. Confirm the source is stopped and check for hazards.
- Determine the water category. Clean, gray or contaminated. Read Category 3 water to understand why it matters.
- Walk you through what they see. Photos, readings and the plan.
- Extract water from floors and carpet.
- Map moisture with meters and thermal cameras.
- Remove what can't be dried, with flood cuts at or above IICRC guidance, typically 2 feet.
- Set up drying equipment.
We don't hard sell. We'll explain what needs to come out and why before it comes out.
What Happens During Drying?
The crew returns to take readings at marked spots and adjust equipment. Expect noise, some heat and a few days of air movers and dehumidifiers. Keep doors and windows closed unless told otherwise, and leave the equipment on.
On larger or more complex losses, we like to have a licensed indoor environmental professional write a protocol. Matthew walks through one in our case study. They're an unbiased third party who maps what needs to be done, then tests for moisture and contaminants at the end and issues clearance if everything passes.
What Documentation Will I Get?
Clear records, including:
- Photos before, during and after
- Moisture readings and maps
- A list of removed materials
- Equipment logs
- Protocol and clearance, when applicable
Those records go straight to our rebuild team. Read how to document a water loss for what to keep.
What Happens During the Rebuild?
G3 takes over. You'll get a written scope, a schedule and one point of contact. We replace drywall, insulation, trim, cabinets, flooring and paint, and we match textures and finishes. If you want to upgrade while walls are open, we do remodels too.
Restoration can take longer than anyone wants. Matthew is honest about that: funding steps, mortgage company involvement, material lead times and decisions all play a part. We'll keep you updated and tell you about delays early.
How Does It End?
With a walkthrough. We walk the finished work with you and make sure you're happy. Our rebuild work is backed by a 1-year workmanship warranty.
What About Insurance?
We're your contractor. We inspect, document and rebuild. We don't negotiate or adjust claims, and we don't interpret your policy. Talk with your carrier or agent about coverage.
