WatchStorm Damage? G3 Roofing & Construction Is Your Best ChoiceMatthew has a name for it: the roofer circus. After a big hailstorm, the trucks show up. Signs in every yard, flags, door hangers, people knocking at dinnertime. Some of them are good roofers. Some are storm chasers who follow the weather from state to state, sign as many roofs as they can and are gone before the warranty matters.
Funny thing is, we don't really knock on doors. We've grown by building relationships and being generous. So here's how to protect yourself from the folks who do it the other way.
What Is a Storm Chaser Roofer?
A storm chaser is a contractor, sometimes from out of state, who moves into an area after a major storm, sells as many jobs as possible and then leaves. Problems show up later: leaks, unfinished work, damaged gutters and screens left behind, and nobody answering the phone.
Not every company that knocks on your door is a storm chaser. But the warning signs are worth knowing.
What Are the Warning Signs?
- They showed up uninvited right after the storm and are pushing for an answer today.
- No local address, or a temporary office, hotel or P.O. box.
- Out-of-state plates and no local references.
- Pressure to sign on the spot, especially a contract you didn't have time to read.
- Promises about insurance, like "we'll get you a new roof" or "you won't pay a thing." No contractor can promise what a carrier will do.
- Asking for a big payment upfront before materials arrive.
- Vague estimates with no product name, color or scope.
- No proof of insurance or licensing information.
- They only talk about the roof and nothing else that got damaged.
What Questions Should I Ask Any Roofer?
- Where is your local office, and how long have you been in this area?
- Are you Licensed & Insured? Can I see proof?
- Who will actually be on my roof, your crew or subcontractors?
- What product and system will you install, in writing?
- Do you replace vents and flashings, or reuse them?
- What's your workmanship warranty, and is it in writing?
- Can I see roofs you've done nearby?
- Will you handle the gutters, screens and other damage, or just the roof?
- Who pulls the permit?
- Can I read reviews from local homeowners?
Why Does "Just the Roof" Matter?
Matthew talks about this in our videos. A lot of roofers cherry-pick the roof and leave you holding the bag on the rest: dented gutters, torn screens, damaged AC parts and stained fences. We're licensed general contractors and licensed roofers, so we look at the whole scope and get it all done. When a contractor only cares about the roof, you're left finding someone else to finish the job.
What Does a Good Roofer Do Instead?
A good roofer gives you time. They inspect, show you photos and write a clear scope with the product, color and system spelled out. They answer questions without rushing you, and they're fine with you getting another opinion. They tell you what they don't know. And they're still around after the job, because their office is down the road and their reputation lives in your neighborhood.
What Should I Do If I've Already Signed?
Read your contract carefully, and talk to an attorney if you have questions about your rights. Don't make large payments until you're comfortable. And check the company's address, reviews and proof of insurance.

Look for a local address, proof of insurance, local references and reviews.
What if a roofer promises my claim will be approved?
