Fire is about the worst thing that can happen to a house. But I'll tell you a secret: some of the best days we have at G3 are on fire jobs. Not the first day. The last one. The day a family walks back into a home that looked like it was gone, and it's theirs again.

That's what "Restoring Hope: Transforming Fire-Damaged Homes" is about. Watch it above, and here's a little behind-the-scenes on what goes into it.

What Does Day One Look Like?

Honestly? Rough. The house smells like smoke from the driveway. There's water on the floors, soot on the ceilings and the family is usually in shock. Our first job isn't construction. It's listening.

We walk the property, explain what's going to happen next and get CMDR Restoration (TDLR RCO #1801), our mitigation partner, started on securing the home: board-up, tarping, water removal and soot and odor cleanup.

What Happens Between the Fire and the Rebuild?

This is the part most people never see. Demo crews take out what can't be saved. Air movers and dehumidifiers run. Moisture gets measured. Our team inspects room by room, takes photos and measurements and writes the repair scope in Xactimate.

It's not glamorous, and it takes time. Restoration has steps that are out of anybody's control. But getting this part right is what makes the rebuild last.

When Does It Start to Feel Like a House Again?

There's a moment on every rebuild when the house turns the corner. Usually it's when the new framing and drywall are up and the rooms have shape again. Then the paint goes on. Then the cabinets, the counters and the flooring. Every week it looks a little more like home.

That's when homeowners start smiling again, and when our crews start getting a little competitive about who did the best work.

What Makes a Good Fire Rebuild?

A few things we've learned:

  • Do the whole job. Fire damage goes into the attic, the walls and the ductwork. Fixing what you can see and ignoring the rest just means problems later. Some projects require more than a new roof.
  • Seal before you paint. Smoke-affected surfaces need the right primer, or the odor comes back on the first hot day.
  • Communicate. Families want to know what's happening. We keep them updated, good news and bad.
  • Sweat the details. The difference is in the details: trim lines, paint edges, cabinet doors that close right.

Why Do We Film These Projects?

Because people don't read anymore; they watch. And because seeing a real fire rebuild from start to finish helps the next family understand what they're in for. It takes some of the fear out of it. If you're going through a fire loss right now, I hope our videos show you there's a way through.

What's Move-In Day Like?

It's the best day. We do a final walkthrough together, room by room. We fix anything that isn't right. And then the family gets their keys back. We've had folks cry, laugh and hug our project managers. Some of them still send us Christmas cards, and we send out brittle every Christmas. They become part of the family, if you will.

Be Grateful. Be Generous. Be Good. That's what G3 stands for, and fire rebuilds are where it means the most.

What Should You Do If You've Had a Fire?

  1. Wait for the fire department's all-clear.
  2. Don't wipe soot or run the HVAC.
  3. Take lots of video.
  4. Call your carrier, then call us at (945) 300-9018.
