LED vs. Incandescent Christmas Lights: Which Wins?

If you grew up in Texas, you probably remember those big, warm incandescent bulbs on your grandparents' house. They looked great. They also got hot, burned out and tripped breakers.

LED holiday lights have come a long way. Today they're what we install on every G3 job. But it's worth knowing why, so here's an honest comparison to help you understand your options.

What's the Difference Between LED and Incandescent Lights?

An incandescent bulb makes light by heating a filament until it glows. Most of the electricity becomes heat, not light. An LED (light-emitting diode) makes light from a semiconductor, so it uses much less power and stays cool to the touch.

That one difference drives almost everything else: energy use, safety, how many strands you can connect and how long they last.

Do LED Christmas Lights Use Less Electricity?

Yes, a lot less. Because LEDs turn more of their power into light, they draw far less from your outlets than incandescent bulbs do. That matters in two ways:

  1. Your power bill. A big display that runs every night for weeks adds up. LEDs keep that in check.
  2. Your circuits. Lower draw means you can light more of your house on fewer outlets without overloading them. Check the manufacturer's rating for how many strands can connect end to end.

Are LED Holiday Lights Safer?

They run much cooler, which lowers the risk of heat building up near dry leaves, wood trim or a wreath. That's a real advantage. Any light can still be a hazard if it's damaged, overloaded or used with the wrong cords, so use outdoor-rated equipment and GFCI outlets. Our guide to holiday display fire safety covers the power side.

Do LEDs Look as Good as Incandescent?

This used to be the knock on LEDs. Early ones were harsh and blue. That's not the case anymore. Warm white LEDs today give that classic, cozy glow, and colored LEDs are bright and saturated. Watch the video above, "Warm White Pattern on a Technical Roof in Flower Mound, TX," and judge for yourself.

A few things to know when you shop:

  • Warm white vs. cool white. Warm white has a yellow, classic tone. Cool white is crisp and bluish. Most homeowners want warm white.
  • Consistency matters. Cheap LED strands can vary in color from strand to strand. On a long roofline, that shows.
  • Bulb style. C9 bulbs are the larger, classic shape you see on rooflines. Mini lights work better for trees and bushes.

How Long Do LED Christmas Lights Last?

LEDs are built to last longer than incandescent bulbs, and they don't have a fragile filament that breaks when a strand gets bumped. Quality still matters, though. Commercial-grade strands use sturdier wire and sockets than most store-bought sets, and they hold up better to North Texas wind, rain and the occasional ice storm.

What Are C9 LEDs and Why Does G3 Use Them?

C9 is a bulb size: the bigger, classic bulb that looks great on a roofline from the street. We install commercial-grade C9 LEDs, custom fit to your home's peaks, gables and eaves. You get bright, even color from one end of the house to the other, in warm white, color or patterns like candy cane. Ask the team about what's available this season.

Is It Worth Switching From Incandescent to LED?

If your old incandescent strands still work and you love them, there's no rule saying you have to toss them. But if you're buying new, adding to your display or tired of tripped breakers and dead bulbs, LEDs are the better choice for most homes. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mix LED and incandescent strands?

It's best not to connect them end to end. They draw different amounts of power and often look different side by side.

Are LEDs cooler to the touch?

Yes. LEDs run much cooler than incandescent bulbs.

What color is most popular?

Warm white is the classic choice, but candy cane and red, white and green are fun too.

Do you install mini lights on trees?

Yes. When you build your estimate, you can add trees, beds and walkways along with rooflines.
