Watch: Storm Damage? G3 Roofing & Construction Is Your Best Choice

North Texas is a lot of things. Dustless isn't one of them. Between spring pollen, summer wind, construction dust, sprinkler overspray and the occasional dust storm, our windows get dirty fast. And there's nothing quite like the afternoon sun hitting a window at just the right angle to show you every streak you left last time.

Let's fix that. Here's how to wash windows like you mean it.

What Do I Need?

Keep it simple:

  • A bucket
  • Mild dish soap
  • A scrubber or microfiber washing wand
  • A good squeegee with a fresh rubber blade
  • Lint-less microfiber towels
  • A soft brush for screens and tracks
  • A vacuum with a crevice tool
  • A sturdy ladder for anything you can't reach from the ground, and a buddy to hold it

Paper towels? Leave them in the kitchen. They leave lint behind.

What's the Best Order?

  1. Pick the right day. Overcast and mild is best. Washing in direct Texas sun dries the soap before you can squeegee it, and that's where streaks come from.
  2. Take the screens out. Label them if your windows are different sizes. Trust me.
  3. Vacuum the tracks and sills. Dead bugs, dirt and leaves come out easier dry.
  4. Wash the glass. Soapy water, scrub top to bottom.
  5. Squeegee. Start at the top, pull down or across in overlapping strokes, and wipe the blade after every pass.
  6. Detail the edges. A dry microfiber towel around the edges and corners.
  7. Clean the screens. Gently brush and rinse with a hose on low. Let them dry before putting them back.
  8. Clean the frames. A damp cloth on the frames and sills finishes the job.

How Do I Get Rid of Streaks?

  • Use less soap than you think you need.
  • Replace a worn squeegee blade; nicks leave lines.
  • Wipe the blade every pass.
  • Work in the shade.
  • Use one towel for wiping and a different, dry one for buffing.
  • Do one side vertically and the other horizontally. Then you'll know which side the streak is on.

What About Hard Water Spots?

This is the North Texas special. Sprinklers that hit the windows leave mineral spots that regular soap won't touch. A few tips:

  • Adjust your sprinklers so they don't hit the glass. Our landscaping crew can help with irrigation adjustments; see our lawn care and landscaping page.
  • Light spots may come off with a gentle cleaner made for glass.
  • Don't use abrasive pads or scrapers on glass with coatings.
  • Heavy, old spots can etch the glass. That needs professional attention.

Is It Safe to Do Second-Story Windows?

Honestly, be careful. Ladders and two-story North Texas homes are not a great combination. If you can't do it safely from the ground with an extension pole, don't. Every year people get hurt falling off ladders doing chores like this. Our lighting team says the same thing about Christmas lights: a professional beats a trip to the ER.

What Does a Professional Window Washing Look Like?

G3 uses the Xero Pure Plus system for window washing where the service is available. Pure water systems use filtered, purified water and a brush on an extension pole. Because the water is purified, it dries without leaving spots behind, and our crew can reach a lot of glass from the ground. Ask about scheduling for your property.

How Often Should I Wash My Windows?

It depends on your house, trees, sprinklers and how much dust you get. A lot of homeowners do it in spring after pollen season and in fall before the holidays. Clean windows also make it easier to spot problems like cracked glass, failed seals and damaged screens early.

Should I Look for Problems While I Wash?

Yes. You're up close with every window, so look for:

  • Fog between the panes, which means a broken seal
  • Cracked or chipped glass
  • Torn screens
  • Cracked caulk
  • Soft or damaged frames

If you find something, see our guide to signs you need new windows and give us a call.
