Y'all, enjoy the nice weekend, because a change is coming.
The National Weather Service in Fort Worth says an upper-level storm system and a cold front will bring a round of showers and storms late Monday through early Tuesday. A few storms could be strong to severe, with the best chance near and north of the Red River. The Dallas Morning News reports forecasters are calling it potentially the strongest system of the fall so far. And behind the front, NWS Dallas-Fort Worth forecasters expect "much cooler temperatures" and "blustery north/northwesterly winds," with lows in the 40s and low 50s, according to this statewide forecast roundup.
Translation for Argyle and Northlake: storms, then wind, then sweater weather. That's a lot for a yard that's already covered in leaves.
The good news is you've got a dry, pleasant Sunday to get ready. Here's how we'd spend it.
Why Prep the Yard Before a Storm?
Because a little work now saves a lot of cleanup later. Wind turns loose things into flying things. Leaves clog drains and gutters right when the rain shows up. And a weak limb that's been hanging on all summer picks a stormy night to let go, usually right over the roof or the fence.
We'd rather you spend an hour prepping than a whole weekend cleaning up.
Your Before-the-Front Yard Checklist
- Put away or tie down anything that can blow. Patio cushions, umbrellas, trampolines, kids' toys, trash and recycling bins, and that Halloween inflatable. If it can catch wind, it can end up in the neighbor's yard or against your windows.
- Clear the leaves. A thick layer of wet leaves smothers grass and turns into a soggy mat after a rain. Rake or mulch them now while they're dry. Our fall lawn care checklist covers what to do with them.
- Clear the drains and downspout outlets. Make sure the water coming off your roof has somewhere to go. Pull leaves and debris off yard drains, French drain grates and the ends of downspouts. If water stands in the same spot after every rain, read our guide to yard drainage solutions.
- Look up at the trees. Dead branches, cracked limbs and anything rubbing the roof or hanging over the house are the first to come down in wind. Ready.gov recommends trimming trees that may be in danger of falling on your home. Big limbs and anything near power lines are a job for a pro, not a ladder. Here's why we trim trees away from your roof.
- Pick up small branches and sticks. They become projectiles in the wind and mower hazards later.
- Turn off the sprinklers. Your lawn is about to get a drink. No reason to water ahead of a rain and pay for it twice. With cooler nights on the way, it's also a good time to think about winterizing your sprinkler system.
- Take a quick video of the yard and the house. Walk the property with your phone. Take lots of video! If something does get damaged, you'll have a clear before picture.
When the Storm Hits
Stay inside. Ready.gov's rule is simple: when thunder roars, go indoors. Don't go out to chase a blowing patio chair in lightning. And never drive through a flooded road. Ready.gov says just six inches of fast-moving water can knock you down, and one foot can sweep your vehicle away.
After It Passes
Once the storm is gone and it's safe, walk the yard before you start hauling.
- Watch for downed lines and hanging limbs. Assume every line is live and call your utility.
- Check the beds, fence and lawn for debris.
- Look at the roof from the ground. Gutters, shingles and screens can tell you a lot. If you see damage, here's how to tell if your roof has hail damage, and you can reach G3 Roofing at (945) 300-9018.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I prepare my yard for a storm?
Put away or tie down anything that can blow, clear leaves and debris from drains and downspout outlets, check trees for dead or cracked limbs, pick up loose branches, turn off sprinklers and take a video of your yard and house before the storm.
Should I rake leaves before it rains?
Yes, if you can. Dry leaves are much easier to rake or mulch, and clearing them keeps drains open and stops a wet mat from smothering the grass.
Should I trim trees before a storm?
Ready.gov recommends trimming trees that could fall on your home. Large limbs and anything near power lines should be handled by a professional.
