Fall is a lot of people's favorite season... until they're left with this.
You know exactly what we mean. One week the trees look gorgeous, and the next week your lawn is buried under a foot of leaves. Those leaves are officially falling, which means it's time to plan what to do with them, and with the rest of your yard before winter.
Here's a fall lawn care checklist for North Texas yards with warm-season grass like zoysia, St. Augustine and Bermuda.
What Should I Do for My Lawn in the Fall?
Fall is when warm-season grass starts slowing down and getting ready to go dormant. What you do now sets up how it comes back in spring. The big tasks:
- Keep up with leaves.
- Adjust your mowing.
- Cut back watering.
- Think about weed prevention.
- Clean up beds and refresh mulch.
- Prep irrigation for freezes.
Let's go through each one.
How Should I Handle Fall Leaves?
Don't let them pile up. A thick layer of leaves blocks sunlight, traps moisture and can smother grass and invite disease. A light layer can be mulched into the lawn with the mower. A heavy layer should be raked, blown or bagged.
Keep leaves out of:
- Beds, where they can mat down and hold moisture against plants.
- Gutters, where they clog drains and push water back under the roof edge.
- Storm drains and drainage areas, where they cause backups.
Leaf cleanup is one of our busiest jobs this time of year. We were even getting a lot of unexpected mowing inquiries heading into October.
Should I Change How I Mow in the Fall?
Yes. As growth slows, you'll mow less often. Keep mowing at the proper height for your grass type, and don't scalp the lawn before winter. Grass needs some height to store energy going into dormancy. Sharp blades still matter. Read our good vs. bad mowing guide for why consistency counts.
How Much Should I Water in the Fall?
Less. Cooler temperatures and shorter days mean your lawn uses less water. Adjust your irrigation controller as the weather cools, and turn it off or pause it when freezes are in the forecast. Overwatering in fall wastes water and can encourage fungus.
Before the first freeze, get your system ready. Our guide on how to winterize your sprinkler system covers backflow covers and freeze sensors.
What About Weeds and Pre-Emergent?
Fall is a common time to apply pre-emergent in North Texas to help prevent cool-season weeds from sprouting over winter. Timing and product choice matter, and you should always follow the label. If you're planning to overseed or lay new sod, talk to us first, since pre-emergent can affect new grass.
Should I Overseed My Lawn?
Some homeowners overseed warm-season lawns with ryegrass for winter green. It's a choice, not a must, and it has trade-offs, since the rye competes with your grass in spring. Ask us if it makes sense for your yard.
What Should I Do With My Beds?
- Clean out dead annuals and fallen leaves.
- Trim shrubs lightly and remove dead branches. Save hard pruning for the right season.
- Refresh mulch to protect roots from cold snaps.
- Plan for freezes. Know which plants need covering. Our guide on how to protect plants from a freeze walks through it.
