Lighting a Technical Roof: Why It Takes a Pro

Some roofs are just showing off.

You know the ones. Steep pitches, three stories, dormers stacked on dormers, a turret, a couple of valleys that run into each other and a peak so high you need binoculars to see it. Gorgeous houses. Absolutely terrifying to hang Christmas lights on.

Our crew calls these technical roofs, and honestly, they're some of our favorite jobs. Watch the video above, "Warm White Lights: 1st Prize for a Technical Roof," and you'll see why.

What Makes a Roof "Technical"?

A technical roof is any roofline that makes installing lights harder or riskier than usual. Signs your roof qualifies:

  • Steep pitch. If you can't comfortably walk it, it's steep.
  • Height. Two stories and up, or homes on a slope where one side is taller.
  • Complex shapes. Lots of peaks, gables, hips, valleys, dormers or turrets.
  • Tile or slate. Beautiful, but fragile under foot and slippery.
  • Hard access. Pools, landscaping or steep yards in the way of a ladder.

If your house checks three or more of these, congratulations, you have a technical roof. Please do not attempt this at home.

Why Is Lighting a Technical Roof So Hard?

A few reasons:

  1. Safety. Steep and high roofs need real roofing safety equipment and a crew that knows how to use it.
  2. Fit. Lots of angles and short runs mean lights have to be measured and custom fit, not just strung up.
  3. Consistency. On a complex roof, uneven spacing or a crooked line jumps out from the street.
  4. Protecting the roof. It's easy to crack tile or lift shingles when you're moving around in tricky spots.

How Does G3 Light a Technical Roof?

We're roofers first. Our crew spends all year on North Texas roofs, including the steep and complicated ones. So we bring:

  • Proper ladders and roofing safety equipment.
  • Commercial-grade C9 LEDs, custom fit to every peak, gable and eave.
  • Clips made for your shingles, tile and gutters. No nails, no staples.
  • Patience. The difference is in the details, and on a technical roof there are a lot of details.

We also don't climb in bad weather. Wet or icy roofs wait.

Do Technical Roofs Look Better Lit Up?

Oh, they're the best. All that architecture that's a headache for installers is exactly what makes the house stunning at night. Every peak and dormer outlined in warm white is something people will slow down to look at. That video above earned its title for a reason.

Is Warm White or Color Better on a Complex Roof?

Warm white is the go-to for showing off architecture. It traces every line without competing with it. Color and patterns like candy cane work too, but they take careful planning so the pattern stays consistent around every corner. Our guide to candy cane, warm white or red and green has more on picking a look.

Should I Try Lighting My Technical Roof Myself?

I'll keep it short: no. Your Christmas lights shouldn't require a trip to the ER. Steep, high and complex roofs are where a weekend project turns into a hospital visit. If you want to light a simpler part of the house yourself, read our holiday lighting safety tips first.

How Do I Get a Technical Roof Lit?

Start our online estimator. Pick your areas and draw your design right on a photo of your home. Don't worry if your roof is complicated. That's what we're here for. We'll confirm everything with you before install day, and after the season we'll take it down and pack it into a storage bin that stays at your home.
