WatchCandy Cane Pattern on a Cement Tile RoofEvery year, families across North Texas have the same friendly argument. One side wants classic warm white. The other side wants color. Somebody's kid wants candy cane. Somebody's spouse wants whatever the neighbors don't have.
Good news: there's no wrong answer. Let's have some fun with it.
Is Warm White Still the Classic Choice?
Always. Warm white is the little black dress of Christmas lights. It goes with brick, stone, siding, any color of shingle and pretty much every HOA. It makes a house look elegant and finished, and it photographs beautifully for the family Christmas card.
Warm white is especially good if:
- Your house has a lot of architectural detail you want to show off, like peaks, gables and dormers.
- You want a look that feels timeless year after year.
- You're also decorating with wreaths, garland or a big red bow, and you want those to pop.

Is a Candy Cane Pattern Too Much?
Not if you ask us. Candy cane, alternating red and white bulbs, is pure fun. It reads as Christmas from a block away and kids love it. Watch the video above, "Candy Cane Pattern on a Cement Tile Roof," and tell me that's not a happy house.
Candy cane works best when:
- The roofline is long and clean, so the pattern repeats nicely.
- You want something festive but still tidy.
- Your house has a lighter exterior, so the red really stands out.
The trick is spacing. Even, consistent bulbs make candy cane look sharp. Uneven spacing makes it look like somebody ran out of red bulbs halfway across the garage.
What About Red, White and Green?
Now we're talking. Red, white and green is the full Christmas card. It's bold, it's traditional, and it takes some planning to get right. We did one we called "Red, White and Green: A Challenging Install," and it earned the name. Mixing three colors across a complex roofline means paying attention to the details so the pattern stays consistent around every corner.
This is a great choice if your family goes all in on Christmas, or if you want the house the neighborhood drives by on the way home.
Are There Other Color Ideas?
Sure. A few we like:
- All red. Simple and striking, especially on white or light stone homes.
- Warm white roof, color in the trees. Elegant up top, playful down low.
- Multicolor. The nostalgic look a lot of us grew up with.
- Cool white. Crisp and wintry, if you like that icy look (even if we only get a few days of real winter).
Ask the team about which colors are available this season.
How Do I Pick the Right Pattern for My House?
Here's a quick, totally unscientific quiz:
- If your house is "the one with the perfect lawn," go warm white.
- If your kids help pick the lights, go candy cane.
- If you own more than one Christmas sweater, go red, white and green.
- If you can't decide, go warm white on the roof and color in the trees.
Seriously, though, look at your home's colors and rooflines, then drive your neighborhood at night and see what catches your eye. Our guide to holiday landscape lighting ideas has more on lighting trees and walkways.
Can I Change My Colors Every Year?
Yes, and that's one of the best parts of seasonal lighting. Warm white this year, candy cane next year. Talk to us before install, and we'll plan your design. Our online estimator lets you draw where you want lights right on a photo of your home.
Will Colored Lights Look Good on a Tile or Steep Roof?
They sure can, as long as they're installed right. We're roofers first, so we use clips made for your shingles, tile and gutters. No nails, no cracked tile. Read more in our guide on how to hang Christmas lights without damaging your roof.
