WatchStorm Damage? G3 Roofing & Construction Is Your Best Choice"How much are new windows?" It's the first question everybody asks, and I understand why. But anybody who gives you a number over the phone without seeing your house is guessing, or setting you up for a bigger number later.
So instead of a made-up price, here's what actually drives the cost of window replacement, so you can understand any estimate you get, from us or anybody else.
How Many Windows, and How Big?
This one's obvious, but it matters most. More windows and bigger windows cost more. Oversized windows, tall picture windows and big patio doors cost more to buy and take more labor to install. Upstairs windows that need extra equipment to reach add labor too.
What Style of Window?
Common styles include:
- Single-hung and double-hung. Sashes slide up and down.
- Sliders. Sashes slide side to side.
- Casement and awning. Hinged windows that crank open.
- Picture windows. Fixed glass that doesn't open.
- Specialty shapes. Arches, circles and custom shapes.
Operating windows have more parts than fixed ones. Specialty shapes usually cost the most.
What Frame Material?
Vinyl, fiberglass, wood, composite and aluminum all come at different price points. Vinyl is usually the most budget friendly. Fiberglass and wood typically cost more. See our guide comparing vinyl vs. fiberglass windows.
What Glass Package?
The glass is a big part of the price:
- Double pane vs. triple pane
- Low-E coatings
- Gas fills between the panes
- Laminated or impact-resistant glass
- Tempered glass, which is required by code in certain locations, like near doors and in bathrooms
- Obscured or decorative glass
What Kind of Installation?
There are two broad approaches:
- Insert replacement. The new window fits into the existing frame. It's usually less invasive.
- Full-frame replacement. The old window is removed down to the rough opening, which lets the installer inspect and repair the opening and flash it properly.
Full-frame replacement usually costs more but can be the right call when the old frames are damaged or there's water damage around the windows.
What Repairs Are Hiding Behind the Old Window?
This is where restoration experience matters. When we pull an old window, sometimes we find rotted framing, wet drywall or damaged sheathing from years of small leaks. That has to be fixed before the new window goes in. A good estimate explains how those surprises will be handled. Read about window leaks and hidden water damage.
What About Trim, Brick and Finishes?
Removing windows can affect interior trim, drywall, paint, exterior trim, siding and brick. Some estimates include all of that. Some don't. Ask.
What Else Should an Estimate Include?
- Removal and disposal of the old windows
- Permits, if required
- Manufacturer warranty details, in writing
- Installation workmanship warranty (ours is 1 year)
- Screens
- Cleanup
How Do I Compare Estimates?
Line them up side by side and make sure they're the same:
- Same number and sizes of windows
- Same style and frame material
- Same glass package
- Same type of installation
- Same trim and finish work
- Same warranties
If one estimate is a lot lower, figure out what's missing. If one is a lot higher, ask what's included.
Can G3 Look at Somebody Else's Estimate?
Yes. Bring us a retail replacement estimate and we'll go over it with you, line by line. Sometimes it's a good estimate and I'll tell you so. We're not tied to a single manufacturer and we don't do the high-pressure sales thing. See our windows and exteriors page.
