WatchMosswood Renovation: Before the TransformationThe Mosswood renovation is one of our favorite projects, and it's a personal one for our team. We filmed the whole journey, from the before walk-through to the finished makeover. It's a remodel story, but if you watch the preview closely, a lot of what Matthew points out on that first walk is about water.
Here's a fun game: let's walk the house the way Matthew did and spot the water clues hiding in plain sight. You might find a few on your own house.
Clue 1: Why Is Painted Brick a Water Problem?
The first thing Matthew noticed rolling up to Mosswood was paint on the exterior brick, plus plastic shutters. Painted brick can look nice, but the wrong paint can trap moisture. Brick needs to breathe. Matthew put it bluntly in the video: if moisture gets back behind the wrong paint, it can literally turn that brick to mud.
What to check on your house: Peeling or bubbling paint on brick, crumbling mortar and white powdery deposits. If you're thinking about painting brick, talk with a pro about breathable coatings first.
Clue 2: What Do Runoff Marks Tell You?
Matthew pointed out water runoff marks along the house and overgrown trees. Runoff marks show where water is pouring off the roof or splashing back onto walls. That usually means gutters aren't doing their job, or water is landing where it shouldn't.
What to check: Streaks on brick or siding, splash marks near the foundation and soil washing out of flower beds.
Clue 3: Why Do Dented Gutters Matter?
The gutters at Mosswood were pretty dented. As Matthew noted, they hadn't been replaced after the last Texas storm. Dented gutters can still sort of work, but dents affect flow and are often a sign of hail damage that never got addressed. That's why we never skip gutters on a roof job.
What to check: Dents, sagging, overflow during rain and downspouts that dump right next to the foundation.
Clue 4: Why Was the Sidewalk a Clue?
This one's sneaky. The sidewalk at Mosswood was below grade. Every time it rained, water ran across the yard and carried mud and dirt onto the walk. That's a grading and drainage issue. Water that doesn't drain away from a house can pool near the foundation, which matters a lot in North Texas clay soil.
What to check: Puddles that hang around after rain, mud washing onto walks and soil that slopes toward the house instead of away.
Clue 5: Why Do Little Things Inside Matter?
Inside, Matthew pointed out every attic access in the garage was broken. That might not sound like a water issue, but attic accesses that don't seal let hot, humid air move where it shouldn't, and broken ones make it harder to check on attic plumbing and AC drain pans. Small things add up.
What Happened Next?
Mosswood became a full transformation, inside and out. You can watch the before preview and the finished makeover on our videos page. It's a reminder that a remodel is the perfect time to fix the water problems you can see and the ones you can't.
And if you're rebuilding after a water loss, it's also a great time to change what you never liked. G3 does both restoration and remodels. Learn more on our remodel page.
How Can I Play "Spot the Water Clue" at My House?
Grab a coffee and walk around the outside after the next rain:
- Look up at the gutters.
- Look at the walls for streaks or peeling paint.
- Look down at the ground for puddles and washouts.
- Peek in the garage and attic accesses.
- Write down what you find.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is painted brick always bad?
Not always. The type of coating matters. Ask a pro before painting brick.
Can bad grading cause water damage inside?
Water pooling near the foundation can lead to problems over time, especially in clay soils.
Was Mosswood a water loss?
No. Mosswood was a full remodel. The water clues were things Matthew spotted during the before walk-through.
