Impact-Resistant Windows in North Texas Hail Country

North Texas is hail country. If you've lived here for a few springs, you've probably heard it hammering on the roof and wondered what it was doing to the rest of the house. On our roofs, we install Class 3 impact-resistant shingles because they hold up better to hail than the cheapest options a lot of roofers put on.

So it's natural to ask: what about windows? Here's an honest look at impact-resistant windows and whether they make sense for your home.

What Is an Impact-Resistant Window?

An impact-resistant window is built to hold together when it's hit. The key is usually laminated glass: two layers of glass bonded to a tough interlayer. When laminated glass is hit hard enough to crack, the pieces tend to stay stuck to the interlayer instead of falling out. Think of a car windshield.

These windows also typically have stronger frames and anchoring designed to keep the glass in the opening during impacts and high wind.

Are They the Same as Hurricane Windows?

Mostly, that's where impact windows come from. Coastal building codes require them in some places because of wind-driven debris. Products are tested and rated to specific standards. Up here in North Texas, we're more worried about hail and the occasional tornado than hurricanes, but the same products are what people are asking about.

Do Impact Windows Stop Hail Damage?

This is where I want to be straight with you. "Impact resistant" doesn't mean "nothing can hurt it." In a big hailstorm:

  • Laminated glass is much less likely to break open and let weather into the house.
  • Glass can still crack or chip, but it tends to stay in place.
  • Frames, screens, trim and caulk can still be damaged.
  • Screens are still screens. They'll still tear.

So impact windows can help protect the inside of your home during a storm, but they're not storm proof, and they don't mean you'll never have to look at your windows after hail.

What Are the Other Benefits?

Impact-resistant windows have some benefits beyond storms:

  • Security. Laminated glass is harder to break through.
  • Noise. The laminated layer can help quiet outside noise.
  • UV protection. The interlayer blocks a lot of UV light, which helps protect floors and furniture from fading.

What Are the Downsides?

  • Cost. They cost more than standard windows. I won't throw numbers at you, because it depends on sizes, styles and products.
  • Weight. They're heavier, which matters for installation.
  • Availability. Not every style and size is available in every product line.
  • Expectations. As I said, they reduce risk. They don't eliminate it.

Which Windows Are Worth Upgrading First?

If you're thinking about impact windows but don't want to do the whole house, a few places make sense to start:

  1. Windows on the side of the house that faces most storms
  2. Large windows and patio doors, where a break means a bigger opening
  3. Bedrooms, for security and peace of mind
  4. Windows over stairs or areas where broken glass would be especially dangerous

Does Installation Matter?

Absolutely. Impact windows depend on the frame being properly anchored into the opening. A great window installed poorly won't perform. It also has to be flashed and sealed correctly so you don't trade hail protection for a water leak. See our guide on window leaks and hidden water damage.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Buying?

  • What standards is this window tested and rated to?
  • Is the glass laminated, tempered or both?
  • What does the manufacturer's warranty cover? (Ask for it in writing.)
  • How will it be anchored and flashed?
  • How does it handle heat and sun in our climate?

G3 isn't tied to a single manufacturer, so we can talk through options with you and look at any retail estimate you've already gotten, without the high-pressure pitch. Learn more on our windows and exteriors page and our roofing page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are impact windows hail proof?

No. They're designed to hold together when hit, which helps protect the home, but glass, frames and screens can still be damaged.

What makes a window impact resistant?

Usually laminated glass with a tough interlayer, plus stronger frames and anchoring.

Do I need to replace all my windows at once?

No. Many homeowners start with the most exposed or largest windows.

Do impact windows help with noise?

The laminated glass can help reduce outside noise.
